Self-Care: Nurturing Your Body as a Temple of God

February 06, 20257 min read

Life can sometimes feel like a never-ending race. Do you ever feel like you are running on fumes? Between work, family, church, and all the other responsibilities on your plate, it’s no wonder that we often forget to care for ourselves! But guess what my friend?

We really need to care for ourselves, not just for our own well-being, but because our bodies are sacred. The Bible tells us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Just think about that for a second. Your body is a place where God dwells. That is incredible, isn’t it?

Today, I am here to remind you that self-care is not selfish. It is a great way of honoring the body that God gave you.

We are going to explore practical tips that could help nourish your body, mind, and spirit so that you can feel more energized, joyful, and ready to shine God's light in the world. Because let's be real, when we are running on empty, it is truly hard to pour into the lives of others, right? When we are taking care of ourselves, we are honoring God's gift and creating space for His light to shine through us more brightly.

Sweet Dreams Are a God-Given Gift (Rest and Recharge - Honoring the Sabbath)

Just like God rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3), we need intentional rest days too. Why? Well because He commanded His people to do so. It's not selfish; it's honoring God's design for our well-being. Rest is part of the design for our well-being, but it can be so easy to forget that in a world that constantly tells us to hustle harder.

Friend, I have been there before just feeling like there is always one more thing to do, one more responsibility to juggle. But when we skip rest, we are not honoring how God created us. Deuteronomy 5:12 says, "Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you." Setting aside time for rest isn’t just helpful; it’s holy.

So, how can we practically incorporate rest into our busy lives? Here are some gentle ways to prioritize rest in your week:

  • Create a Sabbath routine that feels relaxing and sacred.

Ditch the to-do list, grab your favorite devotional, and enjoy some quiet time. Light a candle, sip some tea, and just be in God’s presence.

  • Stick to a bedtime routine throughout the week.

Prioritize a relaxing bedtime routine and aim for 7-8 hours of sleep. Trust me, a good night’s sleep can do wonders for your mood and energy levels! Your body and your brain will thank you.

  • Practice saying "no" without guilt.

It’s okay to step back from commitments when you feel overwhelmed. It is okay to say no! Learning to set boundaries is a form of self-care. Remember, it is better to protect your peace than to overextend yourself.

    Rest is a gift!

Our Bodies Are Temples That Need Good Fuel (Nourishing the Body with Intention)

Would you put junk fuel in a race car? Of course not! The same goes for your body. God made you unique and wonderful, and taking care of your physical health is another way to celebrate that.

Sometimes we think of healthy eating as a “should” or “chore.” But what if we reframed it? What if we began looking at it in a way that nourishing our bodies is an act of worship?

1 Corinthians 10:31 teaches us, "Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." You will be honoring God by thoughtfully choosing what you eat.

Here are some easy ways to start fueling your body with love:

  • Plan simple, healthy meals for the week that don’t leave you stressed. And yes, meal prepping can be your new best friend.

  • Stay hydrated! Keeping a cute water bottle nearby can help remind you to drink more water throughout the day.

  • Try cooking more at home. It’s a great way to bond with family, control the ingredients in your meals, and even have fun experimenting with new flavors.

Remember, small changes add up. Start where you are, and give yourself grace for the process.

Our Bodies Are Made to Move  (Celebrating God's Creation by Moving Your Body)

Here’s the thing about physical activity, it isn’t just about staying fit. Our bodies are incredible gifts from God, designed for movement! It is about celebrating the amazing body God gave you, the one that allows you to walk, dance, hug loved ones, and serve others.

Movement is a way to honor your Creator, and trust me, it doesn’t have to be boring. Plus, it releases those feel-good endorphins that can boost your mood and energy!

1 Timothy 4:8 reminds us, "For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things." While spiritual growth is our ultimate goal, moving your body can boost your mood, energy, and even your faith!

Here are some fun ways that you can make movement joyful:

  • Pick activities you genuinely enjoy. Maybe it’s dancing in your kitchen, hiking with a friend, or trying a new fitness class.

  • Start small! little steps can lead to big changes. A 10-minute daily walk outside can-do wonders for your spirit. Don't try to do too much too soon!

  • Get a workout buddy! Grab a friend or family member to join you. Accountability and laughter are great motivators.

Celebrate the miracle of being able to move, no matter how small the steps may feel.

You’ve Got to Fill Your Spiritual Tank (Connect with God - Spiritual Self-Care)

Just like our bodies need food and rest, our spirits need nourishment too! Connecting with God through prayer, Bible study, and worship is like planting seeds that grow into peace, strength, and joy.

Remember that you can’t pour from an empty spiritual cup. Spending time with God fills you up so that you can then pour into those around you.

Here’s how you can nurture your soul:

  • Carve out quiet time just for you and God. Start with 10 minutes in the morning to read and write one scripture and pray. Consistency matters more than perfection.

  • Join a Bible study group online or at church. Community can inspire and support your spiritual growth.

  • Try gratitude journaling. Writing down just three thankful thoughts a day is a beautiful way to recognize God’s blessings.

Matthew 6:33 says, "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." When you prioritize filling your spirit, everything else falls into place.

I’m Too Busy! Overcoming Barriers to Self-Care

I know what you may be thinking: “This all sounds great and all but I’m too busy!” I get it, my friend, I get it. Life is so full, and it can feel impossible to make room for yourself.

But even small, consistent changes can reshape your routine. Try setting your alarm 15 minutes earlier for quiet time with God, or listen to a podcast during your commute.

Another common struggle is feeling guilty for taking time for ourselves. But remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup! Taking care of yourself allows you to better serve others and shine God's light. It is not selfish; it is a stewardship!

And if you are not sure where to start, that’s okay too! Start small! Pick one practice, like daily prayer, scripture writing or Bible reading, and then focus on being consistent with it.

Conclusion

So, my friend, remember that taking care of yourself is not vanity or selfishness or even a chore; it is an act of worship self-love and gratitude. God created you with love, and He is cheering you on every step of the way.

When you take care of your body, mind, and spirit, you are creating space for His light to shine brightly through you! Now, go ahead. Fill your cup, renew your soul, and radiate God’s love to the world around you!
